+ + + A new modern italian classic + + +
I just received my Antique V3 this week and want to share my thoughts with everyone.
I ordered mine in surf green as I felt absolutely in love with the same colored Vespa in the Cornerstone Trailer.
Design and built quality
The design of the pedal is fantastic. It is a confident unique design as it does not copy any kind of other pedals or come with the standard hammond enclosure decorated with some fancy graphics and combines a vintage look with a modern touch. The parts are designed from Cornerstone, too and are well made and look and feel great. I like the fact that the knobs are moving not too easy so that you can perfectly dial in your preferred settings.
I first thought that the knobs could be a little bit better readable but to be honest: I never do some bigger tweaks on stage but try to find the right settings at home or in rehearsals so it is ok as I prepare everything before I go on stage and the knobs look so good.
Sound and feel
Now we are talking…
Man, this pedal reacts so touch-sensitive and the sounds are colorful and rich of harmonics no matter what settings you dial in. You definitely can get some serious Mayerish sounds out of the pedal but it does not end with these sounds….
With higher gain settings I even get some nice feedback when notes are ringing out on my studio headphones. You cannot even dial in a bad, not usable setting at all. Everything is set up perfectly.
You can make the Antique V3 sound as a typical tubescreamer but you can also get pretty impressive low to midgain overdrive tones with more headroom and without the limitations of a typical tubescreamer.
My favorite setting so far:
Tone: 10 o`clock
Presence: 2 o`clock
Normal mode volume: unity gain
Normal mode gain: 12 o`clock
Hot mode volume: 1 o ` clock
Hot mode gain: 2 o` clock
Compression switch: off
What I really like and what I did not hear on any demo so far:
With higger gain setting in hot mode you can even use it to play some really rocking riffs with punch, the right amount of mids and clarity to cut through a mix. It is not just an overdrive for solo stuff.
My Suhr JM Pro HH stoptail with Thornbuckers really loves this pedal when I play some rock, punk or alternative stuff with hot mode engaged.
Features
The switching system is so clever! Combined with the fact that you can have a boost before or after the overdrive (or both at the same time) with one footswitch you have maximum flexibility. It is like having three pedals in one and that also saves a lot of space on the pedalboard. The expression switch out is handy to engage the hot mode and I connected my JHS red remote with it. Really cool!
Summary
I highly recommend this pedal!
Don`t sum it up like „another tubescreamer clone“. It is so much more than that and a typical tubescreamer was just the starting point for the whole development of that wonderful and flexible pedal.
